http://www.fonetiks.org/index.html/
This site features an online pronunciation guide to nine varieties of English including: American English, British English, Irish English, Scottish English, Welsh English, Australian English, Canadian English, Indian English and South African English.
Students can choose the variety of English that they wish to study, then mouse over the vowel sounds to hear and practise them. The pronunciation guide covers single vowel sounds, two vowel sounds, three vowel sounds, voiced/voiceless sounds, various other sounds, and stress and tone. The stress and tone page shows intonation patterns and students can mouse over and practise the intonation for whole sentences.
Students can practise individually or in pairs. One useful technique is for students to use the sound recording system on their computers: e.g. Microsoft’s Sound Recorder found by clicking Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder. Students record themselves saying the sound, word or sentence and then compare it to the example on the website.
It is interesting for students to compare two different language varieties such as British and American English and analyse the difference. If the teacher’s computer is hooked up to a speaker system, you could play minimal pairs for the class and have students identify the language variety.
This website ties in very well with Ted Power’s “Common Mistakes in English by Language Background” found at: http://www.btinternet.com/~ted.power/phono.html
